Some No-Cost or Low-Cost Tips to Save Energy

Watch the thermostat in winter. Keep it at 68º F during the day and 60º F at night or when you are away. If you still feel the chill, wear a favorite sweater to be comfortable.

Open the curtains or blinds on sunny days during the winter and close them at night to keep warm air in.

Turn off kitchen and bathroom fans once they have done their job —usually after about 10 minutes.

Wash clothes in cold water and turn off the hot dry setting on your dishwasher.

Unplug device chargers when not in use and turn off TVs, computers and game consoles when not in use.

Set your electric water heater to 120º F and fix leaky hot-water faucets.

Replace incandescent light bulbs with LEDs, which use a fraction of the energy and last for years. Start by replacing the bulbs you use most.

Use the microwave or toaster oven instead of your large oven when possible.
